Pinot Grigio
Pinot Gris? Pinot Grigio? What’s the difference? In grape terms there is no difference. Pinot Grigio is the Italian name for the grape, Pinot Gris the French name. As a style, however, there are huge differences. Wine experts agree that Pinot Grigio should be picked early and made into a light, zesty, delicate style – just like it is in Italy. Similarly, they agree that Pinot Gris should be picked later (therefore riper) and perhaps given some treatment in the winery resulting in a more textured, complex, silky and luscious style. Both styles are absolutely delicious. The best examples come from cooler climates (like New Zealand, the Adelaide Hills, Tasmania and Yarra Valley) and higher altitudes (like the north of Italy). Recommended: Heirloom Vineyards, Zonte’s Footstep, RedHeads, Tikohi, Allesandro Gallici, Sentiero dei Pini.
