Wine Summary
This wine may be inspired by the Italian town of Sorrento, but it was grown in McLaren Vale, and shows all the big, rich dark fruit and chocolate intensity of a classic McLaren Vale Shiraz – the kind that won Steve Maglieri the title of ‘Bushing King’ (three times!), plus Trophies for Best Shiraz in the Great Australian Wine Challenge, and Best Shiraz and Red Wine of the Year at the London International Wine Challenge. And the kind that won winemaker Charles Whish a Jimmy Watson Trophy! <br><i>"For the price, this is a classy interpretation, plump and bouncy, while bound to some reductive tension. This oozes black cherry, plum, violet and iodine aromas across a weave of olive and barbecue...90pts" </i>(Halliday).

Wine Summary
With 11 Golds in seven vintages and Trophy in 2020 for 'Best Portuguese Red', Stones & Bones is a top red. It comes from a landscape littered with ancient boulders and dinosaur fossils, hence its name. It's a blend of local and international grapes. Touriga Nacional, the backbone of vintage port, joins forces with Syrah, Tinta Roriz and Alicante to produce mammoth, rich fruit flavours. Equally impressive is the winemaker, Diogo Sepúlveda, who was recently awarded 'Best Producer of Portugal' at an international competition. Having worked in Pomerol, then in the Barossa with heirloom Shiraz vines, his credentials for making this rich, old vine Portuguese red are second to none. For maximum enjoyment, decant and serve with a rich casserole.

Wine Summary
It has been 20 years since Parker-rated winemaker Hervé Sabardeil started making the original Cabalié. In 2012, he crafted a special one-off Vieilles Vignes version, French for ‘old vines’. It proved so popular, and demand was so great, we insisted he make it again and again. Made from Grenache with a large portion of spicy black fruit Carignan, this is a powerful red, weightier than the original. On the palate it expresses ripe plum, blackberry and sweet spices. A superb partner to garlic roasted lamb, rich stews or hard cheeses.

Wine Summary
This juicy, cassis packed red, from an estate in Robertson in South Africa's Western Cape, is named after Jacobus de Wet, son of the founder of the property (in 1859) and great grandfather of its current owner, Peter de Wet. Jacobus always had a very positive attitude and whenever he encountered a setback, just picked himself up and started again. His biggest hiccup was ostrich feathers – his thriving business supplying haute couture collapsed due to the advent of cars and more streamlined hats. Luckily, Jacobus had kept up the estate’s vineyards and so was able to concentrate on winemaking instead. Nowadays, not only do the de Wets make great wine but they also support many community projects. A red to enjoy with a smile and hearty dishes.

Wine Summary
Leconfield Cabernet Sauvignon has been the flagship of Leconfield since the first release in 1977. Their philosophy is to produce a Cabernet Sauvignon displaying both depth and elegance where oak complexes and enhances the fruit but is not allowed to dominate. Leconfield Cabernet Sauvignon has developed an enviable reputation for its expression of Coonawarra terrior. The fruit is from mature vineyards grown in the rich terra rossa soil over limestone for which the region is celebrated. Fragrant, ripe cassis and blackberry enhanced with cedar and cinnamon notes through French oak maturation.

Wine Summary
Portugal is a treasure trove of little known native grapes and one of its best is Castelão. The variety is grown throughout the country but particularly excels in the Setúbal Península. That’s where the highly rated winemaker Jaime Quendera sources grapes for our Rainha do Mar – a moreish, easy going red with juicy raspberry fruit and a silky smooth, rounded style. Centuries ago, this region is where Vasco da Gama set sail to discover a sea route to India. Today the plentiful sunshine and coastal breezes are ideal for red grapes and produce wines that are balanced with excellent ripeness. Rainha do Mar (which means ‘Queen of the Sea’) proves the point. This red’s delicious ripe flavours are ideal with rich pasta dishes or grilled meats.

Wine Summary
The word ‘Nacional’ is reserved for treasures that fly the flag for Portugal. Touriga Nacional certainly does that. A decade ago the Freitas family planted the grape on their acclaimed Fava vineyard. Since 2015, it has produced a wine so special that it's bottled under the vineyard name and has won 15 Golds. That makes it over 70 Golds in 12 years for this fine family estate. Dating back to 1920, Casa Ermelinda Freitas is run by fourth generation winemaker Leonor Freitas. She has been awarded a ‘Comendadora’ for her services to Portuguese wine and her daughter, Joana, is following in her footsteps. Aged in barrel, this rich red is packed with spicy berry, herb and mineral character. Open early and serve with roast meats or a rich casserole.

Wine Summary
Great grapes and great skill; this luscious, silky red will win you over. It’s made by Opi (aka Rodolfo) Sadler at Andean Vineyards. He coaxes so much richness and flavour from the fruit, his peers call him ‘the magician’. Yet he’s such a gentle, affable and modest man. On a visit to Opi, we tried to get him to reveal how he makes wines so delicious he has two permanently in our Top 20! He shrugged and said he simply follows the way his family has always made wine. That’s typical Opi, but not quite believable. The truth is he has a gift, even if he doesn’t know it. He crafts this great red from hand picked grapes grown high in Mendoza, then gently ages it in barrel. Enjoy with spicy sausages, pasta or beef casserole or simply on its own.

Wine Summary
Some of Bordeaux’s top names have recognised the potential of Pomerol's neighbour, Fronsac. Its wines tend to be a touch more rustic than those of Pomerol and Saint Emilion, with a characteristic freshness and pleasing tannic bite. Château Gromel Bel Air lies just beyond the Fronsac boundary, on a very similar terroir and boasts some of the area's highest vineyards. The limestone soils bring out a dense fruit character in the Merlot and are also good for Cabernet Sauvignon, not always easy to grow on this side of the Dordogne. This top vintage was aged in oak for a year, gaining elegant notes of vanilla that balance the wealth of ripe black fruit. Quality is a given with its Supérieur status and trio of Gold medals. Decant early or cellar.

Wine Summary
Cantine Malavasi is a beautiful wine estate, which mainly produces Lugana - the wine everyone's after - on the southern tip of Lake Garda. Danielle is the 4th generation winemaker – all heart and tradition. Respect for the land is at the heart of his philosophy. Everything is done by hand or, if not by hand, by donkey. He loves donkeys - their intelligence, loyalty and hardworking nature. 15 years ago, he planted a small amount of the Bordeaux grape Petit Verdot as an experiment. He thought it would add colour to his wines, along with the Ancellotta, Italy's darkest hued grape. His Petit Verdot performed so well, he bottled it solo and it's won many international awards. Enjoy it here – a stunner with his mum Agnes's handmade tortellini.
