If you’re a fan of the sort of reds you can only get from ancient, ultra-sunny vineyards, then chances are you’ll love Il Brutto. So low-yielding and unprofitable were these heirloom Negroamaro and Primitivo vines that the growers in Puglia were contemplating bringing in the bulldozer to rip them out, so they could plant something more profitable. However, champion of the region and its great traditions, Angelo Maci (triple awarded 'Winemaker of the Year') persuaded them that the fruit of these old vines could make a magnificent rich red. The vines’ twisted trunks may be ugly (‘brutto’) to outsiders, but they’re things of beauty to those in the know. Smooth, full and packed with spicy fruit – big, ripe bramble and damson flavours with lavish herbal spice. This treasured red is a treat with hearty dishes.
The word ‘Nacional’ is reserved for treasures that fly the flag for Portugal. Touriga Nacional certainly does that. This wine's from Casa Ermelinda Freitas, an estate founded a century ago and proud to have been run by three generations of women. The highly awarded Leonor Freitas is in charge today, with her daughter, Joana, next in line. A decade ago the family bought Senhor Fava's vineyard, with its prized sandy soils. He'd always been one of their top growers, but wanted to retire, so they named this wine, made from its grapes, in his honour. Since then, it's won 29 Golds in five vintages and was listed as 'Best Portuguese wine' by The Independent. With over 1400 5-star online reviews, it’s a much-loved red. Ideal with roast meats.

Created by the gifted Thierry Ferlay, it’s brimming with juicy red berries, black pepper spice, and rounded tannins. A real gem on its own, or spot-on with rack of lamb, a robust cassoulet or grilled stuffed peppers.
Opi Sadler is behind many of our most popular Argentine reds. And for good reason - he is a magician of a winemaker. He learnt his skills from an early age in the dark cellars of his grandfather. His family had always made wine and Opi took a healthy interest. That was despite being a little spooked by the sleeping bats that always seemed to come to life as he crept down to the cellar with his candle. He remembers vividly how they'd knock into the it and leave wax prints all over his grandfather’s cellar, hence the name of this wine. Spicy, liquorice-scented Shiraz, cassis-laden Cabernet and dense Malbec create a wine with bags of appealing ripe fruit. Smooth enough to drink solo and great with spare ribs or veggie wraps. It's a Gold medallist made to enjoy young.
We've worked closely with the Masi family in Tuscany's superb Rufina district for 30 years now, first with Renzo and now with his son, Paolo. They are like family. In fact, you may well have met Paolo and his wife Anna Rita at our wine shows. They come every year. Paolo took over the family estate in 1990 having passed his wine studies top of the class. And that talent shows in every one of his wines. Their beautiful property lies high on a hill overlooking the Argomenna valley – it's a prime spot for Sangiovese, placed on a par with Chianti Classico since the 18th century. One of his wines even won '3rd Best Wine of Italy' in 2020 and 2021. Enjoy the cherry fruit and silky texture of his great-value Chianti – ideal with chicken or pasta.
Ludovic Roussillon is one of the top viticulteurs in Bordeaux’s Entre-Deux-Mers. He knows how to coax the very best out of his soils to get the most flavour in his grapes. Work hard in the vineyard and the wine almost makes itself, he says. We’ve worked with Ludovic for a number of years, enjoying both his red and his white from Château Le Coin. This is another wine from his vineyards – mostly Merlot, with a little Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon – all vinified to bring out the fruit richness, supported by sleek tannins. Rethink Bordeaux with this supple, generously fruity, rounded red. It’s already drinking really well, with or without food. Roast beef, full flavoured pasta dishes, charcuterie, cheese – this wine is very versatile.
The Silver Route (named after La Ruta Via de la Plata) is a very appealing red from Extremadura in western Spain. This frontier region is the size of Switzerland, yet has just a million inhabitants. It also has an abundance of cork trees, oaks, black Iberian pigs, and old vines, the age of which ensures intense, ripe, juicy wines. And that’s what you’ll enjoy here. Vibrant, strawberry rich Tempranillo, turbo-charged with peppery, black, brambly Syrah, with that concentration only sun-baked, low-yielding, old vines deliver. Delicious proof that “the most exciting aspect of modern Spain is not what is new, but what is old: ancient vines in undiscovered places” (FT Weekend). Lovely on its own, even better with barbecued kebabs or Spanish ham.
