Beyond the Labels
Easter's on the way, and with celebrations with family and friends in mind, here's an outstanding collection of great Aussie reds ideal to bring to any dining table and satisfyingly smooth enough to keep sipping once the plates are empty. There's lavish Shiraz from the Barossa Valley and Langhorne Creek's exceptional Lake Breeze, succulent Adelaide Hills Tempranillo and lip-smacking Grenache, both great with lamb, and two top drawer Cabernets from McLaren Vale and WA's remote Great Southern region. Kick things off with a glass of McPherson's Bubbly Personality, an Aussie sparkling sure to delight, and there are two elegant stemless glasses in the mix too.

From Lake Breeze, Halliday Wine Companion's 'Best Value Winery of the Year 2022', the Bullant Shiraz is their entry-level offering but it delivers "extraordinary value" (Tony Love, Halliday Wine Companion). You have to feel for the vineyard workers who danced amongst the vines avoiding the menacing bull ants who resided there. And this Shiraz has just as much bite. It can partner a cheese plate equally as well as a rare fillet steak. "Deep ruby core, some purpling tints at the rim. Blackberries and bresaola on the nose. Dark fruits open the palate but morphs quickly into an earth and meat savoury tone. Good flow with supple tannins carrying it quite long into a slightly saline finish. Great value here... 90pts" (Stuart Knox, The Real Review). Drinking well now but will age gracefully for the remainder of the decade.
Shiraz is very much the hero of Australia’s Barossa Valley. Aussie winemaking legend Peter Lehmann once said “When God created Shiraz, he did so with the Barossa in mind.” Patronus comes from a plot of old vines where the amount of fruit is miserly, but the quality is lavish. This Reserve version is a dark, inky beast with ripe aromas of smoky blackberry, fruitcake, toasty oak and dark chocolate… a bigger, bolder and more mouthcoating version of the bestselling Patronus. Get out your biggest glasses for this outstanding Reserve Shiraz! An excellent choice with venison or lamb backstrap.
Made with classy cool climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fruit from Victoria's Goulburn Valley and Strathbogie Ranges, this delicious Sparkling from the McPherson family impresses with its elegance and flavour. A fresh and delicate nose with light fruits and yeasty tones, with hint of fresh berries and cream. A lovely, fresh wine with a lingering bead and a persistent length. It's a terrific apéritif, and of course, a wonderful celebratory drop. And it's a very bright and bubbly addition to any party. Enjoy!
The Winemakers Selection offers quality in every glass you pour, because it's the winemakers who oversee all of life's best drinking experiences - from vineyard, to barrel, to the bottle in your hand. Great wine starts with individuals who share a great passion for winemaking and viticulture, those who are prepared to look deeper than the rest, work a little harder and stay that bit longer. In addition, they intimately know their craft. This smooth McLaren Vale Cabernet melds black fruit chocolatey goodness with a hint of mint. Superb on its own or with something straight from the oven.
The Great Southern wine region lies along the Southern Ocean on Western Australia’s south coast. The pristine ocean and rugged coastline are only part of a spectacular natural environment that includes the ancient Stirling and Porongurup Ranges, magnificent forest, visiting whales and a multitude of wildflowers in season. Stretching 150 km (93 miles) north to south from Western Australia’s south coast and 100 km (62 miles) east to west, it is the largest wine-growing region in mainland Australia. From this stunning wine region, 5 Red Star Halliday-rated Byron & Harold have crafted a glorious Cabernet Sauvignon rich with forest fruits, blackcurrant, plum and bay leaf with dusty dark chocolate tannins. Great Southern reds like this offer exceptional value.
Alex Russell is turning out some exceptional wines under his Russell & Suitor label. The reds are juicy, delicious and quite moreish, much like the Franca's Vineyard Grenache. It's from the Riverland, with just the right amount of sunshine for this thin-skinned varietal to tan its way to aromatic red fruit bliss. Beautiful aromas of strawberry, red cherry and spice are reflected on the palate and carry it through to a lovely, textured finish. A terrific long lunch wine.
Juicy, smooth and oh-so-easy to drink, the 94pt Colab & Bloom Tempranillo smells of violets, ripe cherry and vanilla. On the palate there are nuances of dusty earth, rich red fruits, vanilla and sun-baked leather. Grown in David Blows' Macclesfield Vineyard in the picturesque Adelaide Hills. "Offering fabulous fruit purity and perfume, the wine shows sweet plum, blueberry, floral and subtle spice aromas, leading to a succulent palate that's plump and silky. Delightfully composed and expressed, making it comforting and immediately drinkable. At its best: now to 2028." (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
For pure practicality, these stemless glasses are the way to go. They're elegant without being pompous, and enduringly practical for all your drinking needs. Take them on a picnic, to a BBQ or just enjoy at home without the fear of easily knocking one over. The Dartington story begins in 1920, when the Dartington Hall Trust was founded to help struggling rural communities. Today, it's an award-winning organisation and the leading UK glass manufacturer, with workers who've been in the business for 40 years. You can rest assured your wine is in good hands!
