Tempranillo is proving very popular with Aussie wine drinkers. They’re perfect with tapas, jamon, barbecue and platters. Taste a dozen of these delicious spice-rich drops in one great dozen here.
Three of them are Aussie grown and made, the other three are prestige drops from Spain (one a lavish Gold-medal Rioja, one, a silky Tempranillo Syrah blend, the other a stunning 2016 Gran Reserva-style star from Valencia, dazzling with four Gold). They all have that fabulous flair that makes them such a delight to sip on either solo or with flavour-packed food pairings.
As Robert Parker says, “Spain leads the world for sensational wine bargains of character and soul”, none more so than its mature reds. Nowhere else produces mellow, barrel-aged wines of such remarkable quality and price. Take Palacio del Conde – a gorgeously complex, oaky 2016 from Valencia. Part of this region is close to the coast, while the more southerly part is inland, up in the hills, and dry. It’s there that winemaker Marta Martínez selects the finest, hand harvested – from 50 year old vines – Tempranillo grapes for this Gran Reserva, then ages the wine for three years in oak barrels. A wonderfully fragrant, silky red with mature redcurrant and strawberry fruit and a rich, toasty character. Sublime with roast lamb or tapas.
If you enjoy Rioja, you're very likely to have drunk one or two from the 125-year-old Manzanos cellar. It has been run since 2010 by the fifth generation, the brothers David and Victor, thrust into the limelight by the untimely death of their father. Both in their early 20s, they took up the challenge and have been making us some exciting Riojas since. They also have a top notch winery just to the north east in Navarra, a region that champions both innovation and tradition (here was one of the first to trial Cabernet Sauvignon and make some bold, bright reds 30 years or so back). This 2020 is luscious with lots of deep ripe fruit and juicy length. Very enjoyable and versatile wine, will pair well with most dishes - from pizza's to risottos.
In a textbook vintage, fruit from the Yacca Paddock Vineyard in Kuitpo (In the south west corner of the Adelaide Hills), has produced a juicy, bright Tempranillo of cherry and red berry aromas, with a blue-fruited palate , Ned Goodwin in The Halliday Wine Companion finds it "impressive" So do we – and others. “Deep, bold purple colour, with a youthfully bright spicy and meaty bouquet that hints at carbonic maceration. The palate is rich and fruit-sweet, succulent and delicious, with fine and smooth tannins and fleshy texture. A succulent wine, drinking well now and for a few years hence” (Huon Hooke, The Real Review).
Juicy, smooth and oh-so-easy to drink, the 94pt Colab & Bloom Tempranillo smells of violets, ripe cherry and vanilla. On the palate there are nuances of dusty earth, rich red fruits, vanilla and sun-baked leather. Grown in David Blows' Macclesfield Vineyard in the picturesque Adelaide Hills. "Offering fabulous fruit purity and perfume, the wine shows sweet plum, blueberry, floral and subtle spice aromas, leading to a succulent palate that's plump and silky. Delightfully composed and expressed, making it comforting and immediately drinkable. At its best: now to 2028." (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
The Silver Route (named after La Ruta Via de la Plata) is a very appealing red from Extremadura in western Spain. This frontier region is the size of Switzerland, yet has just a million inhabitants. It also has an abundance of cork trees, oaks, black Iberian pigs, and old vines, the age of which ensures intense, ripe, juicy wines. And that’s what you’ll enjoy here. Vibrant, strawberry rich Tempranillo, turbo-charged with peppery, black, brambly Syrah, with that concentration only sun-baked, low-yielding, old vines deliver. Delicious proof that “the most exciting aspect of modern Spain is not what is new, but what is old: ancient vines in undiscovered places” (FT Weekend). Lovely on its own, even better with barbecued kebabs or Spanish ham.
One of our lovely team members, Sandra, came up with the concept for this label when we mentioned a classy new wine was on the way. The photograph was taken by her father of her stunningly beautiful mother Winsome, which they keep in an album referred to as The Notebook. This is the kind of wine you open on the verandah of a holiday house by the water somewhere with good food and great friends! Aromatic and approachable – everything you want in a tempting Tempranillo. Redcurrant and plum with a touch of savouriness, making it ideal with tapas.
