Beyond the Labels

Savour Portugal’s flagship Touriga Nacional in the intriguingly named ‘Number Ten’, and again in the bestselling Stones & Bones from ancient vineyards. They show off the variety’s lovely berry and violet notes beautifully. There’s a cult classic Baga blend from Bairrada with leather and dark plum fruit, a striking Castelão treasure, vibrant with red fruit and spice, a deeply complex Alicante Bouschet blend – and more. As Jancis Robinson says, Portugal is definitely “on a roll” – try these and you’ll agree!

Wine Summary
Our customers know that it's hard to beat Portugal for flavour and value. So we were particularly excited about Vilarissa Valley, made by the Van Zellers – the family who founded the great Quinta do Noval in 1715. They're renowned for the quality of their winemaking - firstly for world-class vintage port, one of which was rated among the greatest wines of the last century. Plus, they've led the field in Douro table wines. For Vilarissa Valley, the team sourced grapes from the high Alto Douro – local grapes with peerless levels of richness and concentration. The result is a deep wine with velvet smoothness and gorgeous richness, and finished in port barrels for extra spice. Expect dark ripe mulberries, currants, plush tannins and a spicy vanilla finish. A classic that pairs perfectly with steak and frites or a rich stew.

Wine Summary
Our Buyer Jehan Sacaze is delighted to present his newest Portuguese find – authentic Bairrada from thrice Winemaker of the Year, Osvaldo Amado. He's worked in Spain, Italy, South Africa and Brazil and been head winemaker at this cooperative since 1991. It's a world leading cellar too – founded in 1954, it has twice been named Cooperative of the Year. It's also counted among the Top 100 Wineries of the World. To ensure quality, all the grapes for this red are hand harvested from 15-40 year old vines. The main variety is Baga, renowned for its acidity and tannins – no wonder its wines age so well – here complemented by Aragónez and Touriga Nacional. Medium bodied – silky cherry, violets, plum and raspberry with spice. Enjoy this mellow red with grilled meats, herby tomato butter bean bake or meaty type fish.

Wine Summary
Introducing our new juicy Black Red, packed with bold bramble fruit flavours that linger long on the palate. Barrel-aged and silky smooth. Number Ten is our exciting new wine from the Portuguese star, Jaime Quendera. He’s a third-generation winemaker, former winner of World’s Best Red and the man behind bestsellers like Rocksand Shiraz and Vinha do Fava. So this ticks every box for a Black Red fan. But this new inky red has something else. Instead of weighing in at the usual 14% alcohol (or more), this purrs along beautifully at a modest 10%. Not that you’d notice – there’s no dialling back on flavour and concentration whatsoever. Delicious proof that you can have the best of everything. Full-flavour, lighter in alcohol and great value.

Wine Summary
Herdade de São Miguel is a family-owned estate, described by wineanorak’s Jamie Goode as “a new Portuguese star.” Having won over 500 Golds and earned 100 90+ scores in ten years, this winery is certainly living up to that star status. Their Segredos de São Miguel Reserva is a medley of Portugal’s most prized red grapes. Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez, Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira combine to form a sumptuously rich, well-balanced wine that’ll keep you coming back for more. First released in 2006 this Reserva has a history of high scores from critics, reaching above 90 almost every vintage. The 2019 received 91pts from Wine Enthusiast and a Gold. Laden with spiced black fruits and a long tobacco finish, it's spot on with a hearty stew.

Wine Summary
Portugal boasts a superb range of unique, quality wines that punch well above their weight for value, too. This rich red is one of them; from a family run property near Lisbon, close to the Atlantic coast. Founded in the late 19th century, three generations later it produces some of Portugal’s finest bottles. The winemaker is Diogo Sepulveda, who has worked in Pomerol, Napa and Australia's Barossa. This is a special red for Diogo - he sources grapes from his prized vineyard next to the church, the slope of which ensures fabulous ripeness. Rich, dark and supple, Quinta do Espírito Santo blends native grapes Tinta Roriz and Castelão. With intense blackberry and spicy damson fruit, it's a tasty glass with roast beef, duck or a rich game stew.

Wine Summary
With 11 Golds in seven vintages and Trophy in 2020 for 'Best Portuguese Red', Stones & Bones is a winner. As its name suggests, it comes from a landscape littered with ancient boulders and dinosaur fossils. A gorgeous blend of local and international grapes, where Touriga Nacional, the backbone of vintage port, joins forces with Syrah, Tinta Roriz and Alicante to produce mammoth, rich fruit flavours. Equally impressive is the winemaker, Diogo Sepúlveda, who was recently awarded 'Best Producer of Portugal' at an international competition. Having worked in Pomerol, then in the Barossa with heirloom Shiraz vines, his credentials for making this rich, old-vine Portuguese red are second to none. Best decant and serve with a rich casserole.
