When it comes to winning Gold (lots of Gold!) Portugal’s plush and inky powerhouse black reds are hard to beat. Take a look. Four of these Portuguese treasures boast GOLD! The other two both have a long history of Gold and will no doubt be wearing some bling soon. No wonder Wine Spectator calls Portugal the <i> “most exciting wine place on the planet”. </i>

Wine Summary
Portugal's characterful reds are criminally under represented in Australia. But we're righting that wrong with full flavoured beauties like Amoras. It comes from Casa Santos Lima, a grand, family-run property near Lisbon and the Atlantic coast. It was founded by Joaquim Santos Lima at the end of the 19th century and, three generations later, is one of Portugal's most go-ahead cellars. The wine was made by bull wrestling Diogo Sepúlveda, who has worked in Pomerol, Napa Valley and at 5-Star Halliday rated Turkey Flat in the Barossa. Amoras brings together four cracking local grape varieties: leafy raspberry Castelão, juicy cherry-rich Camarate, cassis-laden Touriga Nacional, and plummy Alicante Bouschet! It's a stunner - enjoy!

Wine Summary
With 11 Golds in seven vintages and Trophy in 2020 for 'Best Portuguese Red', Stones & Bones is a top red. It comes from a landscape littered with ancient boulders and dinosaur fossils, hence its name. It's a blend of local and international grapes. Touriga Nacional, the backbone of vintage port, joins forces with Syrah, Tinta Roriz and Alicante to produce mammoth, rich fruit flavours. Equally impressive is the winemaker, Diogo Sepúlveda, who was recently awarded 'Best Producer of Portugal' at an international competition. Having worked in Pomerol, then in the Barossa with heirloom Shiraz vines, his credentials for making this rich, old vine Portuguese red are second to none. For maximum enjoyment, decant and serve with a rich casserole.

Wine Summary
The word ‘Nacional’ is reserved for treasures that fly the flag for Portugal. Touriga Nacional certainly does that. A decade ago the Freitas family planted the grape on their acclaimed Fava vineyard. Since 2015, it has produced a wine so special that it's bottled under the vineyard name and has won 15 Golds. That makes it over 70 Golds in 12 years for this fine family estate. Dating back to 1920, Casa Ermelinda Freitas is run by fourth generation winemaker Leonor Freitas. She has been awarded a ‘Comendadora’ for her services to Portuguese wine and her daughter, Joana, is following in her footsteps. Aged in barrel, this rich red is packed with spicy berry, herb and mineral character. Open early and serve with roast meats or a rich casserole.

Wine Summary
Jaime Quendera is the winemaker behind many of our best selling Portuguese reds. He's also the most important wine consultant of southern Portugal. He learnt from the best, working alongside João Portugal Ramos, another top name for wine in the country, after he graduated in 1994. He loves making wine in the Península de Setúbal - <i>"it has history and tradition, distinct terroir, perfectly adapted grape varieties and winemaking know-how".</i> Its poor sandy soils are also ideal, keeping the vines thirsty, so grapes are really concentrated. Fonte Real is named after the 'Royal Fountain' - stopping places for the royal entourage when they were on their way to a social events. Long aged in barrel, this smooth red is a top choice with hearty dishes.

Wine Summary
Valoroso means ‘valiant’ – a word that could not only be applied to this delicious red, but also to the team behind it. The wine’s pedigree is most impressive – it comes from the Freitas family estate, near Lisbon. In 2008 they won ‘Best Red Wine in the World’ at the Vinalies Internationales in Paris. Furthermore, fourth generation owner Leonor Freitas has been awarded a ‘Comendadora’ Order of Merit for services to Portugal’s wine trade. Valoroso is a rare marriage of plush Cabernet Sauvignon, velvety local speciality Touriga Nacional and Syrah. The wine bursts with intense bramble fruits. It’s seriously smooth too, thanks to the expertise of internationally respected, award-winning winemaker Jaime Quendera. Serve with hearty dishes.
