Beyond the Labels
Savour 6 silky Pinot Noirs – from Tasmania, Tumbarumba, Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills and WA's Mt Barker, while New Zealand's Martinborough flies the flag for delicious, vibrant Kiwi Pinot. Check out the contents here but devotees will be keen to get these into their glasses quickly – and save $73 too.
With viticulture in their historical veins, brothers Vic, John, Kon and Chris banded together in 1996 to create their dream vineyard as a legacy to their late father, Jim Peos, and late grandfather, P.Y. Peos. The Four Kings range is named after the four Peos brothers. This is rich, plush Pinot Noir with red currants, plums and raspberries driving the flavour profile. Fleshy fruit on the palate flecked with hints of mushroom and cardamon spice, with clean acid pushing to a lingering finish and a tangy exclamation point at the end. Matured in new and old French oak. Dangerously easy to drink.
From the family owned Corryton Burge, whose winemaking legacy stretches back six generations to 1855. "Since then, our family has dedicated itself to crafting exceptional wines that have become synonomous with excellence in the Australian wine industry." That family includes legendary figure Grant Burge. Today Trent and Amelia Burge carry on that great tradition at their homestead at Corryton Park in the Barossa's Eden Valley. Their mother grew up in Cornelian Bay, Tasmania, and always wanted to produce wine from her home state. This wine sourced from the acclaimed Coal River Valley – excellent for Pinot Noir – is a delight, with aromas of cherries and Black Forrest cake, succulent sweet fruit flavours, delicately edged in oak for a year, giving it attractive savoury notes.
Winemaker Bryan Currie has been hunting for the best Pinot Noir grapes around the foothills of the Snowy Mountains near Tumbarumba for 20 years. "It’s taken a long time to get my head around Tumbarumba wine – it’s a truly unique place." His Hungerford Hill Tumbarumba Pinot Noir 2022 showcases notes of ripe cherries, wild red berries and hints of blackberry. These fruit aromas are intertwined with delicate violet florals and a touch of spice. The silky medium-bodied palate builds on the red fruits, with a touch of cranberry and a hint of forest floor or earthiness. Refreshing natural acidity forms the backbone, driving the depth of flavour to a lingering finish. Lovely drinking now but could cellar for 10 years.
Be Bold. Be Brave. Be Courageous. That’s the motto of Kings’ Creed in South Australia’s beautiful Adelaide Hills district. Their aim is to “craft small batch wines of quality with bold character.” The wines are made by the legendary Ben Riggs, so that’s a creed that will be easy to live up to. This vibrant Pinot Noir is indeed boldly flavoured, the quality Adelaide Hills fuit delivering silky cherry dlavours with plenty of depth.
A 'hart' is a term akin to stag, the name used for a male red deer. You can see The Hart proudly depicted on the front label of this beautiful 'limited release' Patronus Barossa Valley Pinot Noir. The Barossa might be known for its ripe, warming reds, but for those who know where to go, there are magical pockets of cool climate vineyards tucked between valleys and perched on hillsides. This is where winemaker Andrea Maxwell discovered the special parcel of Pinot Noir which made its way into The Hart Pinot Noir. The wine is light and fruity with aromas of green strawberry, raspberry and rhubarb. It is juicy yet soft and rounded with subtle spice and earthy notes. A fun and easy drinking red, especially when chilled 20 minutes before serving.
From Mount Barker, where the modern West Australian wine industry began in the mid-1960s. Aromas of raspberries and cherries on the nose, with hints of violets, spice and freshly turned earth. Juicy raspberries drive the palate against a backdrop of black cherries, fennel, rosemary and black olive. "A splendid rendition of the variety, showing dark cherry, sweet plum, thyme, toasted nut and dried mushroom aromas on the nose, followed by a silky-smooth palate offering excellent weight and refined texture, finishing wonderfully long and velvety. Stylish and seductively complex, offering terrific drinking... 94pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
