Wine Summary
Established in 2009 by Bill and Vicki Widin, 5 Red Star Leogate Estate is barely 10 years old, but is already a formidable force. Their vines are much older - the Widins are proud owners of the original Brokenback Vineyard established by Rothbury Estate over 40 years ago. They’ve also recently acquired an organic Mudgee vineyard. As Halliday says, they’ve had “a string of wine show successes for their very impressive portfolio”. Their Shiraz is lovely: “Light to mid-weighted, plying a reductive tension to baking spice and sour cherry fruit. The tannins, gently pliant, are licked with iodine, spice and tapenade.” (Ned Goodwin).
