Beyond the Labels
The vineyards of Italy’s north east have long been renowned for whites but in the Colli Orientali around a third of the wines are red. Pico Atila is a mix of Merlot with local grape Refosco. Head to beautiful Tuscany, home to a 95pt Sangiovese blend, Saracosa, and on to d’Abruzzi for a classic 90pt, smooth, plummy Montepulciano. Down south, in Puglia, which offers “undreamed-of character and potential” (Hugh Johnson), you’ll enjoy the delights of Corsiero Nero’s Nero di Troia grape, with a massive 97pts from the Luca Maroni Guide, bestselling Pillastro Primitivo on Gold-winning form again and the massive Negroamaro Primitivo double whammy of La Font d’Oro!

Wine Summary
If you enjoy the food friendly reds of northern Italy, especially the Valpolicella Ripasso style, you will love this. We have worked with Italian Winery of the Year Cantina di Negrar for years. They own a vineyard in the Marano Valley and they’ve offered us a deal on their Rosso Veronese – a wine usually reserved for their Italian fans. It’s named after Bartolomeo Lorenzi, whose epic 18th century poem of rural life made Valpolicella wines famous the world over. The Marano Valley is especially cool, so grapes have a longer ripening time that adds depth, character and a freshness to the wines. Also included is a dash of dark Amarone. With black cherry fruit and Christmas cake spice, it’s hard to imagine a more appealing Rosso Veronese.

Wine Summary
Montepulciano is the top red grape of Italy’s Abruzzo, in La Chiamata showing off all its deliciously silky, ripe red fruit and juicy plum charm. And this has just won 90pts: “An inviting and generous example, full of succulent black fruit, backed by notes of cinnamon and vanilla spice. Polished tannins and attractive, balanced acidity make for a very enjoyable wine” - IWSC.

Wine Summary
Pillastro is one of our bestselling Italian reds – customers love all that richness, warmth and bold, ripe fruit. It comes from Puglia, in Italy’s deep south, best known for big, smoky wines made from prized local varieties Primitivo and Negroamaro. This 2020 is from Angelo Maci, a leading figure in the quality revolution of the last two decades, whose cellar Cantine Due Palme has thrice been named ‘Winery of the Year’. Angelo himself has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement award too. Made purely from Primitivo, this is a rich, powerful red. A period of oak ageing has infused the wine’s generous plum and damson character with notes of spice and vanilla. Enjoy with hearty casseroles, pasta with a rich tomato sauce, or garlic roasted lamb.

Wine Summary
Saracosa is inspired by the ‘Super Tuscans’ – a style first developed by Antinori in the 1970s. These wines kick started the region’s renaissance and became some of the most exclusive and expensive in the world. Saracosa is from the Barbanera family estate, overlooked by the Saracosa hill near Montalcino. Half the vineyards are in the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, and the remainder just beyond. In the fine 2019 vintage Saracosa’s old vines delivered exceptional concentration. The fruit was then part-aged in French oak barriques to lend a toasty layer of complexity. Dense, dark cherry and chocolatey tones make this a serious choice for pasta with pork ragù or bistecca alla fiorentina (steak with cannellini beans in tomato sauce).
