Beyond the Labels
Winner of a top Trophy, Platinum and Gold, the intriguingly named Baron Von Nemesis is a rich and powerful, old-vine Barossa Valley beauty boasting dark chocolate, mulberries, blood plums and plenty of complex layers of spice. Corryton Burge is a new label to our cellars, from sixth-generation Barossa siblings Trent and Amelia Burge. Their excellent 2020 vintage Shiraz shows a “succulent palate ... beautifully rounded and silky” (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit). The hugely appealing fresh raspberry and redcurrant flavours of Krondorf ‘Into the Vines’ marry with darker fruit and spice to great effect, and won it Double Gold in its debut vintage. Another Golden debutante is the regal RedHeads King of the Barossa. Rich, intense and packaged in an old-school Barossa bottle, it’s sure to win many fans as well.93pt Five-Fifty Shiraz from Mountadam in the chilly heights of the High Eden also boasts Gold, plus lovely blue fruit and peppery acidity. Styles of Barossa Shiraz have broadened over time, and Tscharke are leading the region further into the future with organic wines, like their high scoring Shiraz Shiraz Shiraz that beautifully balances fruit from three separate vineyards in the Barossa sub-regions. It’s fragrant, expressive, juicy and delicious! Get all of these beauties in your glass to see why Barossa Shiraz is so popular. Take a bottle of each of these six and save $76.
In 1847, the people of Krondorf began a wine industry that helped lay the foundation for what the Barossa is today. As custodians of this legacy Nick Badrice heads the winemaking team that crafts modern expressions of signature Barossa varietals. Look for fresh aromas of raspberry and dark berry, bright and textural redcurrants with a hint of spice. Elegant and refined with subtle oak, a persistent length and a supple tannin finish. This one, which has scooped a Double Gold in its debut vintage, is a real treat for the senses!
Located in the High Eden sub-region of the Barossa, Mountadam was originally established in 1972 by the late David Wynn for his winemaking son Adam. Since 2005, it has returned to being a family owned and run winery, with David and Jenni Brown overseeing its success. Quality has got better and better, and now with Caitlin Brown as chief winemaker, they have a very fine and deserved reputation indeed. High Eden’s chilly heights lead to harvests up to a month later than those in neighbouring Eden Valley. The result is gorgeous Shiraz like this, full of blue fruit and peppery acidity. “Wonderfully ripe and perfumed on the nose showing black/blueberry, violet, clove and spicy oak aromas, followed by a beautifully weighted palate offering fleshy texture and silky tannins. Upfront and delectably appealing… 93pts” (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
Corryton Burge's 92pt Barossa Shiraz showcases lifted aromas of chocolate-coated raspberry licorice, nutmeg, cheesecake and underlying smoky, toasty oak. Displaying characteristics seen in many Shiraz dominant wines from the region from the exceptional 2020 vintage. The palate is rich and bold with its fruit and chocolate flavours however the tannin levels are subdued, leaving the palate with a sense of rounded readiness for immediate enjoyment. The flavours of milk chocolate and sweet spice linger. Half the wine was aged in oak for 10 months, and the other aged for 18 months. Predominately American oak barrels with about 30% French oak. Only a small percentage of new oak, allowing the fruit's freshness and vibrancy to shine through. "Splendidly fruited and fragrant, the wine shows dark cherry, rich floral, game and toasted almond characters on the nose, leading to a succulent palate that's medium-full and supple. Beautifully rounded and silky, well framed by grainy tannins, finishing lingering and structured... 92pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
For this brand new premium Aussie red, the RedHeads team sought out the region’s best growers, prised the finest fruit from their top vineyards, added some winemaking magic at their state of the art, fully sustainable winery, and delivered it in a classic, old-school Barossa bottle! It’s rich, bold, intense, and already a Gold winner. A regal drop indeed!
Tscharke are leading the way with organic wines that reflect the terroir and the personality of the fruit. In their high scoring Shiraz Shiraz Shiraz, which uses fruit from three separate vineyards in the Barossa sub region of Marananga, they bring to life aromas of blueberry and plum with a vibrant fresh quality, while an underlying gamey and dusty savouriness complements the fruit. The palate is explosive and juicy with cherry, plum and forest berries, supported by hints of spices that stretch into the textural finish. Well balanced structure thanks to the crunchy acidity, full body and fine tannins. It boasts scores of 94 and 92pts.
Nothing impresses dinner guests quite like having nobility at the table. Meet Barossan-born ‘Baron Von Nemesis’ Shiraz, still basking in the glory of its recent Trophy-winning success. This aristocratic Shiraz is made from select, old-vine parcels of fruit from a prized single site in the Barossa. Rich and lusciously intense. Classic Barossa, with all the trimmings. Dark chocolate, blood plums, Christmas pudding spice and vanilla aromas whet the appetite. Fleshy and generous fruit flavours flow across the palate: think blackberries, plums, mulberries and raspberries, with dark cocoa, coconut and hints of liquoricety. Powerful with juicy acidity. Trophy for Best Shiraz at Critics Challenge 2022; Gold medal at the European Wine Challenge. Roast beef or haunch of venison would make an appropriate food match.
