Beyond the Labels
Looking for a little excitement in your wine tasting? You’ve come to the right place here. This dazzling dozen is full of exciting varieties that will really surprise and delight. You’ve a tempting Adelaide Hills Tempranillo, a marvellous Merlot from Allegiance Wines, dazzling with awards, a scintillating Sangiovese from Salena Estate with FIVE Trophies, a gorgeous GSM from the prestige Richard Hamilton Estate in McLaren Vale, pure Pinot perfection from Patronus and the Barossa Valley and a power-packed Petite Sirah (aka Durif). Delicious!
In 1962 Alfred Liebich’s love of fishing led him from Barossa, where his family settled in 1852, to the Murray River. His ‘left bank’ vineyards produce plush Petite Sirah (aka Durif) brimming with blueberry, black cherry and spice. This debut vintage has already scooped Gold! "Dark, opaque red with ruby reflections. Generous nose, full of blackcurrant and black cherry aromas. On the palate, moderate tannins, freshness and crisp, clean fruit. Youthful and accessible." (International Challenge Gilbert & Gaillard).
Harvested from a single Merlot vineyard near Paringa in South Australia. The vines are aged between 22 and 50 years and tend to be low yielding for the region as the Allegiance Wines team aim for quality as opposed to yield in their brilliant Gold-winning Fullylove Merlot. "Distinctive jammy cherry, spices and ash-like smoky notes on the nose. The palate is articulate and nicely perfumed with tannin presence. This is a clean, generous Merlot for marinated meats" (Gold medal, Gilbert & Gaillard wine judges).
The 96pt Salena Estate Ink Series Sangiovese cleaned up at the Riverland Wine Show – winning Trophies for Best Alternative Wine, Best Other Red Blend, Best Single Vineyard, and Best Wine of Show! It won FIVE Trophies in total. Here's the much-anticipated follow up vintage. Sangiovese is an Italian variety from the Tuscan region in northern Italy and has made itself comfortably at home in Australia's warmer regions. With wild herbs, cherries and violets all present on the nose, the palate is light with graceful structure finishing with clean acidity and soft tannins.
A deliciously smooth and silky GSM from the great Richard Hamilton estate. Fruit comes from the Hamilton family’s Farm Block, while the individual varieties, Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre were fermented separately and aged in seasoned oak to retain fruit dominance. Full red with youthful crimson hues. Subtle use of oak allows the fruit to shine through to reveal attractive hints of boiled fruit cake with cinnamon and cloves this wine will accompany the best pasta, paella, or rich gamey meals – or just enjoy it on its own.
A 'hart' is a term akin to stag, the name used for a male red deer. You can see The Hart proudly depicted on the front label of this beautiful 'limited release' Patronus Barossa Valley Pinot Noir. The Barossa might be known for its ripe, warming reds, but for those who know where to go, there are magical pockets of cool climate vineyards tucked between valleys and perched on hillsides. This is where winemaker Andrea Maxwell discovered the special parcel of Pinot Noir which made its way into The Hart Pinot Noir. The wine is light and fruity with aromas of green strawberry, raspberry and rhubarb. It is juicy yet soft and rounded with subtle spice and earthy notes – and it's considerable charmshave already won it a Gold. A fun and easy drinking red, especially when chilled 20 minutes before serving.
Juicy, smooth and oh-so-easy to drink, the 94pt Colab & Bloom Tempranillo smells of violets, ripe cherry and vanilla. On the palate there are nuances of dusty earth, rich red fruits, vanilla and sun-baked leather. Grown in David Blows' Macclesfield Vineyard in the picturesque Adelaide Hills. "Offering fabulous fruit purity and perfume, the wine shows sweet plum, blueberry, floral and subtle spice aromas, leading to a succulent palate that's plump and silky. Delightfully composed and expressed, making it comforting and immediately drinkable. At its best: now to 2028." (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
