South Australia is such a great hunting ground for rich, classy reds. Langhorne Creek’s Bleasdale Vineyards is riding high, and you can taste the results today with their very attractive 93pt, plum-and-pepper-laced Generations Shiraz. There’s a second luscious Shiraz, from Fleurieu, plus a Shiraz Cab combo loaded with black fruit flavour. Straight Cabernet comes in Double Gold-winning Chapel Hill’s The Prophet. A visit from McLaren Vale’s Black Pig is always welcome, and here the pig delivers a velvety and generously rich Merlot. McLaren Vale is also home to some of Australia’s finest Grenache – as Thistledown’s aptly named 92pt Gorgeous Grenache illustrates perfectly. The impressive All-Gold Superstars dozen boasts six wines with four Double Golds and six Golds between them and includes a fine quartet from Trophy-winning winemaker John Quarisa. John’s multi Gold-winning Mr Q Malbec lines up with two rich Shiraz champs plus aptly named The Great Bonza – a memorable Aussie speciallity Shiraz Cab blend.Joining this star-studded party are two lush straight Cabernets – in RIverscape Esate, crafted by none other than Greg Follett of Lake Breeze fame (so the Double Gold should not surprise), plus Bill Calabria’s Long Live the King Cabernet, which has been a bestseller for years. You can (and will) enjoy two bottles of each – alongside your FREE Double Gold, 93pt Kilikanoon Barossa Shiraz worth $45.

This classy, smooth as silk Cabernet hails from the famous soils of Langhorne Creek. Hurry to reserve your share of this tiny volume red. Dark crimson in the glass, with enticing aromas of blackberry, ripe red cherry, red capsicum and fresh herbs. Hints of dark chocolate sit on the back palate and run to a long, smooth, complex finish. No need to cellar (though you can, for another 3 years or so if you like). It's drinking beautifully now. "Nose of black fruit, combined with stone fruit, a vegetal touch and noble minerality. Fleshy, silky and remarkably well structured on the palate. A success to be enjoyed with a nice piece of meat... 91pts... Double Gold" (Gilbert & Gaillard Wine Judges).
The judges at China's Wine & Spirits Awards were impressed by this rich, spicy Shiraz, unanimously awarding it a Gold. It’s from John Quarisa, who for many years made wine for the biggest names in Oz, winning both the Jimmy Watson and Stodart Trophies. Today, with the help of his wife Josephine, he crafts winners like this. ‘Passion is Everything’ is their motto, and, after just over a decade in operation, their winery in New South Wales boasts four stars from Aussie wine guru James Halliday. He describes the “exceptional value for money provided by the wines” and is full of praise for this red. It’s deliciously easy going, but still packs a punch of luscious ripe fruit. A sure bet for a bbq, a roast or a hearty bake.
Q Malbec. The Q stands for Quarisa. John Quarisa. He’s the man dubbed a "magician” by James Halliday because quite how he crafts such full flavoured, amazing value for money South Australian reds leaves some scratching their heads and others standing up in applause. Bright intense red with purple hues. Flavours of blueberries, also classic Malbec mulberry, red cherries and notes of cedar; cocoa and wafts of violets too. Generous and sensual, and through its structure remains rich and lush. Along with barbecues, Malbec teams up a treat with bold summery dishes.
The Italian families of the Riverina have been producing royally good wines for years and now the secret is out! In critic James Halliday’s words... Calabria Family Wines “consistently delivers exceptional value for money across the entire range”. Bill Calabria, the leading light behind this wine, received a Queen’s Birthday Honour for his services to charity and the wine industry as a whole. Indulge in his classy Gold-winning Coonawarra (and Riverina) Cabernet Sauvignon. Lovely intensity of rich fruit with layers of blackcurrant and herb flavours and spicy toasty oak notes. The tannins are firm, the finish smooth, long and powerful.
John and Josephine Quarisa’s passion extends far beyond the boundaries of the wine industry, to their home, their family, their hobbies, heritage and through the simplest things associated with everyday life. This life long, energetic partnership started at school when John and Josephine became high-school sweethearts. Over the years they have grown and developed and are still laughing and loving every step of the way. As a winemaker for over 30 years, John’s winemaking has been awarded some of Australia’s greatest accolades including both the Jimmy Watson and Stodart Trophies. John’s experience drove him to develop a range of wines that are down to earth, full of character and approachable. Also true of John himself! This Shiraz is intense cherry red with purple hues. Aromas fresh ripe berries are complemented by rose petal and orange blossom. The same ripe berry flavours are given added complexity on the palate thanks to well-integrated vanillin oak and spice notes. Long, smooth and irresistible.
A regional soulmate to Kilikanoon's Clare Valley Covenant Shiraz and McLaren Vale Parable Shiraz, the Testament reflects the unique, terroir driven expression of the Barossa Valley, both its opulence and regional distinctiveness. Opulent and voluptuous, with waves of blackberry, cherry, vanilla and spice, balanced by hints of olive tapernade savouriness. Awarded Double Gold and 93pts at Gilbert & Gaillard, the judges recognising it as "A promising, age-worthy fine wine."
Bonza is Aussie slang for something excellent or first-rate. And there's nothing more Aussie in a wine bottle than a classic blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. It's no wonder then that John Quarisa calls this fine red 'The Great Bonza Reserve'! Quarisa has enjoyed a “distinguished career as a winemaker spanning over 20 years” (Halliday, and he likes his wines to express big personality, juicy fruit and value for money. He’s certainly achieved that here! Ripe and round blackberries conspire with flavours of plum and cinnamon spice. On the palate, rich red berries and brewed coffee make for a very appealing wine.
