In this impressive showcase we offer you a 90pt Barolo and a red crafted by an Amarone specialist with grapes from Valpolicella Classico and a dash of Amarone. Tuscany offers Gold-medal Chianti from old friend Paolo Masi and a 95pt Sangiovese Merlot from the famed Barbanera family estate. Head south to Puglia for a mighty Gold-medal Negroamaro Primitivo combo, then on to sunny Sicily for a 92pt classic Nero d’Avola. Buy 12: save $134.
In 1968 western Sicily was rocked by an earthquake. Such was the devastation, residents of Poggioreale had no choice but to abandon their properties and rebuild further down the hill. Whole settlements became ghost towns overnight. This included Dino’s grandfather’s Nero d’Avola vineyards. 50 years on, Dino set out to recover his grandfather’s lost plot of land. He found it wild and uncultivated, yet producing jewel-like grapes with amazing flavour. In 2017 he made his first ‘revived’ vintage which proved a sensation with customers. It's pure Nero d’Avola, a Sicilian grape, fast becoming a fashionable pick in smart restaurants. Dino’s creation is packed with rich black fruits and spice. A top choice with sausage casserole.
If you’re a fan of the sort of reds you can only get from ancient, ultra-sunny vineyards, then chances are you’ll love Il Brutto. So low-yielding and unprofitable were these heirloom Negroamaro and Primitivo vines that the growers in Puglia were contemplating bringing in the bulldozer to rip them out, so they could plant something more profitable. However, champion of the region and its great traditions, Angelo Maci (triple awarded 'Winemaker of the Year') persuaded them that the fruit of these old vines could make a magnificent rich red. The vines’ twisted trunks may be ugly (‘brutto’) to outsiders, but they’re things of beauty to those in the know. Smooth, full and packed with spicy fruit – big, ripe bramble and damson flavours with lavish herbal spice. This treasured red is a treat with hearty dishes.
If you enjoy the food-friendly reds of northern Italy, especially the Valpolicella Ripasso style, you'll love this. We have worked with Italian Winery of the Year Cantina di Negrar for years. They own a vineyard in the Marano Valley and they’ve offered us a deal on their Rosso Veronese – a wine usually reserved for their Italian fans. It’s named after Bartolomeo Lorenzi, whose epic 18th-century poem of rural life made Valpolicella wines famous the world over. The Marano Valley is especially cool, so grapes take longer to ripen, which adds depth, character and freshness to the wines. Also included is a dash of dark Amarone. With black cherry fruit and Christmas cake spice, it’s hard to imagine a more appealing Veronese red. Great with game.
Grape grower Natale Seghesio is known as 'il Poeta' ('the Poet') to his friends, both for his lyrical compositions (featured on the label), but also for the intensely flavoured produce of his vines, growing in the premium Piedmont hills. Talented winemaker Paolo Sartirano snaps up Natale's grapes every year, taking them to his family's cellar. Founded in 1871, this cellar is now 150 years old and today in the hands of the fourth generation. Barolo is a northern Italian classic and Paolo has crafted Il Poeta to be a truly poetical expression of the finest Nebbiolo. Three years ageing in large barrels ensures the fruit marries perfectly with the subtle oak. Deeply flavoured and complex, the wine is best opened a few hours early and decanted. Or left to age. Its, firm tannins support cherry, plum, flower and spice notes, and it's best enjoyed with hearty dishes.
We've worked closely with the Masi family in Tuscany's superb Rufina district for 30 years now, first with Renzo and now with his son, Paolo. They are like family. In fact, you may well have met Paolo and his wife Anna Rita at our wine shows. They come every year. Paolo took over the family estate in 1990 having passed his wine studies top of the class. And that talent shows in every one of his wines. Their beautiful property lies high on a hill overlooking the Argomenna valley – it's a prime spot for Sangiovese, placed on a par with Chianti Classico since the 18th century. One of his wines even won '3rd Best Wine of Italy' in 2020 and 2021. Enjoy the cherry fruit and silky texture of his great-value Chianti – ideal with chicken or pasta.
Saracosa is inspired by the ‘Super Tuscans’ – a style first developed by Antinori in the 1970s. These wines kick started the region’s renaissance and became some of the most exclusive and expensive in the world. Saracosa is from the Barbanera family estate, overlooked by the Saracosa hill near Montalcino. Half the vineyards are in the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, and the remainder just beyond. In the fine 2019 vintage Saracosa’s old vines delivered exceptional concentration. The fruit was then part-aged in French oak barriques to lend a toasty layer of complexity. Dense, dark cherry and chocolatey tones make this a serious choice for pasta with pork ragù or bistecca alla fiorentina (steak with cannellini beans in tomato sauce).
