Wine Summary

Decanter magazine awarded the previous vintage of this "darling of a wine" a stunning 92 points, and the 2013, just out, is every bit as impressive. It's all down to a patch of ancient and forgotten Aglianico and Primitivo vines, discovered by talented winemaker Mario Ercolino while tramping through the northern Puglian countryside. Realising their potential, he tracked down the owner and persuaded him to coax them back into production. Between them they christened the vineyard Somaro, after the rare breed of donkeys that once worked the land.

Mario matured this wine for six months in small French oak casks, bottling with minimal filtration to preserve its flavour and complexity. Enjoy with braised beef, spicy sausage pasta or a hearty casserole.
