Twenty-odd years ago I fell in love with wine and the people who make it, while on a student exchange in Bordeaux. A graduate job with a Perth wine merchant followed and in 1999 Tony Laithwaite (my pommie uncle) persuaded me to move to London to help Laithwaites Wine promote quality Australian wines.
In 2007 - after eight long winters! - I returned home to Australia and quickly got tired of seeing shelf after shelf of mass brands from just a handful of wine refineries... fewer than 100 of Australia's 2,600 wineries are big enough to supply the supermarkets and their branded liquor chains.
So it was my turn to do the persuading, convincing Uncle Tony that there was a gap in the Aussie market for home-delivering wines of genuine character. He agreed and Wine People was born ... with me doing the swirling and spitting, and managing director Rachel Robinson providing the charm and the business skills.
