From the archives: it's 30 years since Tony started championing Australian wines overseas ... an uphill struggle in those days!
Join an international wine family
Wine People is part of the Laithwaites Wine group, started by wine merchant Tony Laithwaite in the 1960s when he drove a small van of Bordeaux from Saint-Emilion to sell from a railway arch in Windsor.
These days the company serves 1,000,000 customers internationally (not to mention running wine services for the likes of The Wall Street Journal and Sunday Times of London) and was recently named Merchant of the Year at the prestigious International Wine Challenge.
Tony has championed Australian wines overseas since the 1970s - long before Australian wine had won the world over - and today Wine People sources the Aussie wines for our international partners, so you benefit from serious buying power back at home ... wineries roll out the red carpet for our customers!
What's more, no-one does imported wine better than Wine People because our international range is selected by a global team headed by 'Master of Wine' Justin Howard-Sneyd with guidance from Tony and legendary wine author Hugh Johnson. That means you can discover the wines of France, Spain, Italy and beyond with absolute confidence.

A word from our Wine Director, Andrew Stead:
Twenty-odd years ago I fell in love with wine and the people who make it, while on a student exchange in Bordeaux. A graduate job with a Perth wine merchant followed and in 1999 Tony Laithwaite (my pommie uncle) persuaded me to move to London to help Laithwaites Wine promote quality Australian wines.
In 2007 - after eight long winters! - I returned home to Australia and quickly got tired of seeing shelf after shelf of mass brands from just a handful of wine refineries... fewer than 100 of Australia's 2,600 wineries are big enough to supply the supermarkets and their branded liquor chains.
So it was my turn to do the persuading, convincing Uncle Tony that there was a gap in the Aussie market for home-delivering wines of genuine character. He agreed and Wine People was born ... with me doing the swirling and spitting, and managing director Rachel Robinson providing the charm and the business skills.
Four years later, 48,000 customers have abandoned the big retail chains to join the fun at Wine People - and we're always delighted to make room for a few more. To learn more, visit our Frequently Asked Questions page or Contact Us.
